Why you’ll love this…
  • The beloved Corfu retreat of Empress Sissi of Austria – Achillion Palace, is on the agenda
  • You'll discover the coves of Paleokastritsa and visit the Greek Orthodox monastery
  • There's a lunch of meze, ouzo and other local specialities at a family-run taverna in Bella Vista
  • Sampling Corfiot citrus liqueur at a family-owned kumquat distillery is a treat for the tastebuds
  • Your expert local guide has an unrivalled knowledge of Corfu and its historic sites
What to expect

Corfu's past as the playground of royalty vies with its rugged coastline for top billing in this exclusive tour. You'll visit Kouloura, Achillion Palace and gardens, a kumquat distillery and Paleokastritsa. Sofia, one of our local guides, says, ‘The views over Paleokastritsa and its heart-shaped bays will reveal why locals call it the Balcony of the Gods.'

You'll kick off the day at Kouloura, where a tiny horseshoe-shaped marina is shaded by pines. From here, we'll head to the seaside village of Paleokastritsa. You'll have free time to visit the Orthodox monastery – admission is free – or the many coves with beaches. A boat trip can also be arranged. Next, there's a scenic drive to Bella Vista, so-called for its views over Paleo Bay. We'll drop into a family-run taverna, where Spiros, the owner, will offer you meze with tzatziki, taramo salad, cheese pie, tomato, feta, olives and ouzo.

Then we'll continue to the Achillion Palace to the south of Corfu town. Empress Sissi of Austria was enamoured with Corfu and its mythological heritage, particularly the story of Achilles, and her palace and gardens are filled with sculptures of Greek gods and goddesses. If it seems familiar, it may be because the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only was filmed here. After a pit stop at Kanoni to see Mouse Island, we round off the day with a visit to family-owned kumquat distillery. Here, you'll learn all about this exotic citrus fruit and products made from it – marmalade, syrup and liqueur among them.

Nat Geo Day Tour: Flavours of Corfu, Cook with Locals at an Organic Farm

Feel the soul of Corfu at Bioporos Organic Farm, situated on the banks of Korission lagoon. Your deep dive into Corfiot farming begins with an introduction to your hosts for the day and the true stars of the show: the farm's owners.First, you'll join the host's mother who will teach you how to make organic cosmetics, such as face masks, beeswax cream, and more. You'll use ingredients which you can find in your kitchen or garden back home, and take your creations with you at the end of the day.Next, prepare a traditional Corfiot pie, mix up your own tzatziki and knead bread. Your host will light the wood-burning oven and soon you can enjoy the aromas of the slow-cooked pie and bread you helped to prepare. While your lunch bakes, the owner himself will lead you through the farm, proudly showing off his collection of farming tools, his olive trees and bee hives. His tales illuminate the relationship between Corfu and olive farming, and his passion for regenerative agriculture shines through when he demonstrates how he promotes the conservation of endemic plant species. You'll also discover the history of this EU-protected lagoon and its impact on the local people, as well as details of the surrounding wildlife, rare flora and numerous bird species found here. After your trip around the farm, you'll savor lunch fresh from the oven, paired with a fresh salad from the farm's garden. For dessert, relax with a cup of coffee while you gaze over the idyllic scenery.
