What to expect

History meets scenery on this Tramuntana Mountains tour. You'll visit the honey-stone village of Valldemossa, explore handsome Soller town and enjoy the views on a vintage train ride through mountains and valleys. Xisco, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The train is the pride of the people of Soller. Because their town was so hard to reach behind the mountains, they built the railway with their own money a century ago so they could be connected to Palma and export their famous oranges.'

Kick off in Valldemossa, a cluster of stone houses tumbling from a ridge in the heart of the Tramuntana Mountains. You can either explore the village under your own steam or join a guided tour to learn more about its history and culture. Xisco adds, ‘My favourite street in Valldemossa is Carrer Rectoria, a narrow alley is lined with potted plants. Saint Catalina Thomas was born here, and her house is now a chapel.' Then it's on to Son Marroig for a guide tour of the ravishing Renaissance-style estate overlooking the sea.

Next, we'll head to Soller, a busy town built by wealthy citrus fruit merchants. You'll have free time to explore, potter around the shops, pop into a church or two, or soak up the sun in an outdoor café. The day rolls to a close with a journey back in time on a wooden train inaugurated in 1912 and still in full working order today. This scenic ride weaves through the Sierra de Tramontanta to Son Reus, where you'll join the transfer back to base.

I think a little more time in solller would have been good. It’s got the tram to go to the harbour but you don’t get enough time to do it. Whether that means you miss out the house/museum to get more time..

Loved the trip-sister in law walks with a walking frame and she found it difficult with the wheels on the cobbled streets so she wouldn’t go again

Our guide was excellent and provided all the things we needed to know and do, Naturally with a whistle stop tour of a number of locations there is never enough time in each place, but the crowds in popular locations were extreme and things like public toilets unable to cope. But despite that the overall experience was excellent.

Tour guide could hardly speak English and didn’t make herself understood. Left us when we were at our destination and didn’t show us round like the other tour guide so didn’t get to see everything. Someone brought it up as there were some slower people in the group but unfortunately it didn’t make a difference. Too vague. The other guide on the other bus had a flag to be identified and spoke to the group as he went. Unfortunately we couldn’t join him as he spoke German. Time management was bad.

Loved the experience but felt a little rushed for time. The driver was a pro at dealing with the challenging twisty roads up into the mountains. The guide, Raul, was very passionate about the Island and very knowledgeable. Raul was also very helpful to two ladies with additional needs, especially considering he wasn't made aware they were joining the experience beforehand. Overall a beautiful experience with lovely places and amazing scenic views.

Nat Geo Day Tour: La valle degli aranci
