What to expect

The uninhabited islet of Elafonisi in southwestern Crete is bursting with natural beauty and cultural riches. Topolia Gorge, Agia Sophia Cave, Chrissoskalitissa Monastery and a beach many consider the best on the island are among the star turns of this day trip. Rena, one of our local guides, says, ‘This tour combines the best of the Cretan highlands with the idyllic pink-sand beach of Elafonisi on the south coast.'

It's a laidback start to the day, with a pit stop for coffee in a family-run taverna in the farming hamlet of Voulgaro. From here, a dramatic drive south through the Topolia Gorge awaits. The views on the deep ravine to your left are epic. We'll then visit the cave of Agia Sophia, which is famed for its stalactites. Linked to a variety of legends, it's said that the hoof print of St George's horse can be found here. And if you look hard enough, you'll find what looks like a horseshoe print in a rock.

Next up is the Chrissoskalitissa Monastery. Built on a hill overlooking the coastline, this 1,000-year-old retreat offers timeless charm. Its name means ‘golden steps' and it's steeped in myth. According to some, one of the steps is golden – but is only visible to the religious. The last port of call is nothing short of postcard-perfect. Rena says: ‘You can reach Elafonisi islet walking through a shallow stretch of water from Elafonisi beach.' Spend the afternoon swimming, relaxing and taking in the top-tier views, then we'll finish the day at Paleochora fishing village.

I went away with my partner and this whole day overed things my partner wanted to do and myself, it was defiantly value for money, it was an amazing experience, the views, cave, beach, even the tour guild was so lovely and helpful. I would defiantly recommend this trip. There wasn't anything I didn't enjoy, I did not expect the stairs to the caves but the views were amazing and you don't have to go up to the Caves there was a beautiful cafe also.

The stop overs were great but more time should be allocated to visit the cave and the monastery, as we felt rushed and at times not had enough time to use the toilets. The cave was an eye opener and walk up was scenic but challenging as not everyone has so much stamina or may have minor physical impairments and not able to rush. The beach visit was great. In general a great day out including the olive oli tasting though a tad disappointed as we had hoped to have a glimpse of Olive oil production

5 stops around the island felt a little rushed in the 8 hours, the first few stops especially. However absolutely every stop was something fantastic and would have loved more time to explore and enjoy! Absolutely loved the final stop of Paleochora, a beautiful village with such a calm vibe. Our guide Martha was fantastic and so knowledgable about the island in general. Great day!

Minos our guide, was knowledgeable, informative and very approachable. The visits and journey were fun and comfortable, I would suggest maybe more time in Palachoria, you have just enough time to eat a pizza, maybe 40 more minutes at Palachoria and skip the monastery, but that's a personal choice.

Mynos and Rana were brilliant. The tour showed us key parts of island culture and history. Including some open times for us to explore independently was also gteat
