Why you’ll love this…
  • You'll watch the sunrise from the viewpoint at Pico do Arieiro
  • There's an opportunity to take photos of the dawn – often from above the clouds
  • You'll warm up with a tasty breakfast at a mountain restaurant
  • You can enjoy the scenic journey from the summit afterwards
  • An expert local driver who knows these mountains like the back of their hand is included in the tour
What to expect

Watching the sunrise from the top of one of Madeira's highest peaks will have you reaching for your camera over and over again. And this exclusive morning trip to Pico do Arieiro promises just that – views over Madeira during the mystical first light of the day, followed by a warming breakfast. Arlindo, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘You may wonder why we plan to drive to the peak a while before the sun is due to rise. You'll see when you get there that the best colours light up the sky during the half-hour before the sun appears.'

You'll want to pack warm layers, a hat, gloves and scarf for this morning tour, as the temperature can often be up to 10 degrees lower at the top of Pico do Arieiro than at the coast. We'll set off early, with a pre-dawn pick-up from your hotel – this is to ensure you can reach the top in time to find a good viewpoint for the chance to watch the sun bathe the island of Madeira in golden light. Often, clouds sit below the Pico do Arieiro, making the sunrise views even more magical.

Coffee will be served as you're taking it all in and enjoying the moment in the midst of mountains and clouds. Afterwards, you'll head along to a restaurant for a tasty breakfast. Arlindo adds, ‘It can get very cold on the Pico do Arieiro, sometimes it even snows there. My parents used to drive us up here if there was snow at the peak. The local tradition was to build a snowman on the bonnet of the car before driving back down again.'

The sunrise itself was beautiful. The driver was 30 mins late picking us up which was fine as he still got us there 30 mins before sunrise. It was blowing a hooley up there so an extra 30 mins would have been very uncomfortable. My issue is that there was no communication. He didn’t ring us and there was no one for us to ring as the offices didn’t open til 8. The driver was very apologetic. He was also very friendly.

The sunrise itself is spectacular, we were lucky with the weather. What I was surprised at was the number of people there , looking for that tic tok /, Instagram shot...and with several drones too that sort of spoilt the magic of the moment. We were collected on time and can't fault driver/guide . Good breakfast after at restaurant on way down. The sunrise is superb , and worth the 5am get up for.

Sunrise over Pico do Arieiro was an amazing experience, we loved it and our driver/guide was fabulous. He was friendly, professional and drove safely. Coffee and blankets were provided but fortunately it wasn't that cold during our visit. Would highly recommend this trip.

Prompt collection, friendly driver. Got us to where we needed to be before it got too busy. The sunrise was spectacular, I only wish I owned a better camera. Coffee and breakfast was good, it was only a small breakfast but was back at the hotel on time for a 2nd one! Al in all a very memorable trip and worth every penny.

Nat Geo Day Tour: Local Farm Experience on Madeira’s Terraced Hills

Drive through Funchal's bustling town and Madeira's magnificent rolling hills towards Quinta Pedagogica da Camacha, a small farm committed to sustainable agriculture. Here, your National Geographic-trained guide will offer insights into the region and introduce you to the farm's owner, Bruno Santos. Having left accounting for agriculture, Bruno now dedicates his life to helping his neighborhood through sustainable farming, a lowered environmental footprint, and community outreach. Follow Bruno through flowering groves as you explore the grounds. You'll learn about the many uses for their freshly grown herbs and visit their strawberry plantation. Observe the fields and poios—what Madeirans call the terraced areas where they grow their crops—as you learn about the farm's produce and animal husbandry. The farm is home to various animals including chickens, goats, sheep, and more. There's even a small market Bruno created, to help other local vendors reach their greater community, inspired by the ‘buy local' mantra. You'll also experience a host of seasonal activities, offered exclusively to National Geographic travelers. Harvest ripe fruits and learn the proper techniques for sowing seeds in a planting workshop. This hands-on learning environment brings Bruno's sustainability and bio-friendly philosophy to life. Afterwards, you'll relax and enjoy refreshing tea brewed from the farm's own herbs, as well as homemade cakes, toast, and jams preserved from local fruits.
