Excellent day out from start to finish, Darrell our guide was funny and extremely knowledgeable. Lunch was really good traditional Greek food, good for me to as a coeliac needing gluten free food. We start with a drive along scenic paths and olive groves, passing ancient relics as we climb through Crete's hills. We'll then call in at a small village where you can sample raki and olive oil with the locals. Cretan olive oil is prized for its purity and flavour, as well as its high polyphenol content and low acidity, which make it very healthy.
From here, the real off-road adventure begins as we rumble into the mountains and follow an ancient trail used by shepherds to reach flocks high in the summer pastures. In simple shepherd's huts, fresh goat milk is used to make a tasty homemade cheese. Next, we'll visit a family-run taverna for a typical local lunch – a vegetarian option is also available – with unlimited wine.
