Why you’ll love this…
  • Trace the rise and fall of Rome’s biggest political player, Julius Caesar, on a walking tour that brings National Geographic studies of his military prowess and lasting societal impact to life.
  • Your Roman history guide and archaeologist will take you off the beaten track to delve deeper into Caesar's main contribution to the Eternal City, the Roman Forum, a monumental complex that was commissioned by Caesar in 54 BC.
  • Draw parallels between ancient Rome and the modern-day powers of the capital as you take in symbolic locations and monuments that continue to shape the political landscape here.
  • Delve into the conspiracy behind Caesar’s assassination with insights on who masterminded the attack and why so many of his inner circle collaborated to bring down the self-proclaimed dictator for life.
  • Visit some lesser-known sites, like the Theatre of Marcellus and the Porticus Octaviae, then finish the tour on a high note with the impressive Pantheon.
What to expect

The infamous Julius Caesar has always been a subject of curiosity and intrigue. His legacy stretches through the centuries, with his achievements – and ego - changing the history of Rome forever. Your historian and archaeologist guide specialises in this period. Their stories and insights will open up the ancient world of power struggles, war exploits and socio-political reform that made Caesar and the early emperors of Rome so fascinating.

Begin on the hill of the Piazza del Campidoglio, with views of the Roman Forum ruins, where elections, public speeches and processions were once held. Here, you’ll learn about Julius Caesar’s meteoric rise to the political prime time, as well as the evolution of the Forum under Rome’s early emperors.

You’ll take in the Porticus Octaviae and the Theatre of Marcellus, often seen as a mini version of the Colosseum with its own impressive arches, before reaching the Largo di Torre Argentina and Theatre of Pompey. It was here, as Julius Caesar approached the Senate, that he was famously assassinated on the Ides of March, 44 BC. Your guide will share the inside story of the conspiracy, shedding light on how, despite expanding the empire and passing laws supporting the poor, Caesar’s arrogance and desire for total power sealed his fate.

Round off your gallop through Roman history at the majestic Pantheon. From its colourful marble floors to its imposing domed ceiling and central oculus, it reflects all the might and glory of the Roman Empire.

Lovely, very knowledgeable guide. Nicole took great care of us and made us feel very welcome. Very punctual and considerate with the heat we experienced. Nicole gave us some recommendations for places to eat, and other places to visit linked to our personal preferences. Very personal and approachable. The whole family felt listening and cared for. We couldn't have wished for a better guide. 10/10.

Every thing was brilliant, the guide the journey around the city. This was our Holiday opening tour - what a perfect way to learn about the romans and to travel round the streets hearing & feeling what the world once was in ceasar’s time. Our Guide ‘Nichol’ made this experience brilliant listening to someone who is enthusiastic about the topic & made the tour really enjoyable and worthwhile. This was a great opener into Rome before we went on to look at the colosseum & palatine hill. Amazing!
